Last year, I decided to find a new hobby.

I had two requirements:

1. It can’t involve a screen
2. It needed to be a creative outlet

First, I tried sketching. Back in high school I remembered I enjoyed sketching side profiles of human faces I’d find in magazines. So I thought, let’s give that a try!

I got a kit from Joanne’s and purchased a course on Udemy to refresh and improve my skills.

But I didn’t enjoy it.

The learning curve was a bit too high, so I knew I needed to try something else.

Randomly I stumbled upon hand embroidery. I’ve never sewn anything in my life. No one I knew personally embroidered. But I did some research and thought, why not?

Bought a starter kit from Amazon, watched quite a bit of YouTube videos, and I was hooked.

I’ve only completed a few pieces, and they take quite a bit of time, but embroidery has really helped provide a healthy outlet for my mental health.

Embroidering puts me in a somewhat meditative state. Time flies by without noticing, and usually I turn on a mindless show like Love Island UK or listen to an audiobook in the background.

I’m no expert, and I don’t plan on monetizing this hobby right now. But if you’re looking for a new creative hobby, I highly recommend giving embroidery a try!

It’s no longer caring about other people’s opinions of you, as much as possible.

It’s making choices that feel good to you. Not forced.

Of course, not all of this is easy all of the time, but embracing true authenticity does bring a sense of ease into your life.

Because you’re finally being yourself.
