Netflix Binge: Jane the Virgin

I was truthfully a little hesitant to watch Jane the Virgin…the title kind of turned me off. However, I didn’t know anything about plot, characters…well, anything honestly. All I can say is I’m so glad I gave this series a chance a couple weeks ago, because it quickly became one of my new favorite shows.

As I mentioned before, I went into watching this show with no knowledge on anything, except that the main character is a virgin named Jane. I thought the show would be focused around her virginity and making fun of the typical stereotypes that come from someone who prefers to remain a virgin. I couldn’t be more wrong.

For those of you who don’t know, Jane the Virgin is about a successful and smart Latina woman named Jane. Her life is perfectly on track with her overall plan: graduating college aiming to become a teacher, loving family, and perfect fiancé. Everything is going swimmingly, until she’s accidentally artificially inseminated with the sperm of a man she had a crush on nearly four years ago. (Didn’t see that one coming, did you?)

Something I love about this show is the main character. Jane is an incredibly strong and independent young woman. Family is her number one priority, whether it’s her mother, grandmother, or soon-to-be child. I’ll try my best not to spoil anything for those of you who haven’t seen the show, but one aspect about Jane that I love is she doesn’t blindly make decisions. I don’t know, maybe it’s because I’m very similar to her, where I always have to plan something out ahead of time before taking any huge action towards something important. Even though the story is as crazy as a telenovela, the characters are relatable and you can’t help but fall in love with basically all of them. (Even the narrator.)

If you haven’t given Jane the Virgin a shot, please change that. With charming characters, a unique plot, and some interesting/dark twists, it’s easily raced its way to one of my favorite shows.

Season one is on Netflix now, and season two is currently airing on Mondays at 9:00 pm on the CW!
